MCC Updates Computer and Academic Labs
Middlesex Community College (MCC)
provides many paths to higher
education for approximately 6,200
students at two
campuses
located in Lowell
and Bedford,
Massachusetts.
MCC wanted to prioritize the students' needs, provide high quality service, and
update the computer labs on both
campuses. The network where the
academic labs resided needed to be
addressed; a Local Area Network (LAN)
within a LAN was needed.

Continental
Resources provid-
ed the solution
with over 300 new
XPRO®Systems
Pentium II PCs in
the labs and two
new HP servers,
one for each
campus. These
XPRO Systems
Pentium II PCs
complement
Continental's
professional
networking,
systems integration, and support services. These PCs
combine the architectural advances of
Intel's Pentium Pro processor with the
instruction set extensions of MMX
technology.

| A LAN Within a LAN |
In 1996, the local area network (LAN)
at Middlesex Community College
(MCC) consisted of several DEC VAX
mainframes providing file and print
services to two campuses and 14 buildings. The new Dean of Academic
Resources, Margaret McDevitt, wanted
to improve computer services in
computer labs to all students and faculty
using technology.
The first goal was to concentrate on the
student computer labs and current
network. Dean McDevitt felt it was
important to separate the network out
to a LAN within a LAN (one for
academia and one for administration).
The existing network was rather slow,
and this upgrade would result in
improved service to students and give
faculty their own LAN.

Continental Resources' XPRO Systems Pentium II PCs and Windows NT Server Installations
Continental Resources' Systems and
Network Integration Division
specializes in complete solutions for
heterogeneous computing environments. Their professional life cycle
services include the design, consulting,
implementation, and support of local
and wide area networking, Internet,
intranet and remote computing solu-
tions. Continental offered MCC the
following solution of system staging and
rollout, ongoing support of systems
(including a comprehensive post-
installation network support contract),
and Windows NT support and training
for users and administrators.
Continental installed two HP
NetServers® running Windows NT 4.0.
Each computer system required a
10BaseT connection. These NT servers
would be used with the existing VMS
server. If one server was down, another
would be the backup.
