A Case Study

"Continental provided the initial equipment required to the Daily News in five business days -- an outstanding response."

"Continental met the Daily News' schedule demands by providing equipment within 10 - 14 business days, whereas the competition required a minimum two-week lead time."

The Case

Management at The New York Daily News wanted to replace their current financial and editorial data- bases with the latest technology. The finance department was currently using Dun & Bradstreet® software, and the editorial database ran on an Atex® system. In addition, the paper's 386 and 486 personal computers (PCs) had to be upgraded to be compatible with the new PeopleSoft® software.

This software would administer the editorial database, and provide a fully integrated financial package invoicing, purchasing, and receiving. Although this upgrade was initiated by the New York Daily News™ finance department, both U.S. News & World Report and AGT were directly impacted. The current software and hardware at all three companies was outdated, and new equipment was required to run NT-based personal computers compatible with PeopleSoft® software.

Continental Awarded Contract Over Dell and Compaq

In May 1998, Continental replaced all of the New York Daily News' current 386 and 486 PC clones with Continental™s own line of XPRO® Systems Pentium II PCs, as well as several new networked HP 4000 TN laser printers.

Competition including Dell® and Compaq® gave proposals to the New York Daily News, but Continental Resources was awarded the contract. According to one of the New York Daily News primary decisionmakers, Continental provided excellent service at a competitive price."

Continental Resources provided several Windows NT™ and Windows 95™ file servers to support the New York Daily News' computer network in two facilities: Jersey City, NJ, and 33rd Street, New York City, NY. These networks administer the paper's automated pagination software and e-mail.
