Continuing last month’s discussion on disaster recovery solutions, we raise the following questions:
Why is resiliency critical in backup environments?
When you talk about protecting large amounts of data, it’s incredibly important that your systems have no single point of failure. When you’re only protecting terabytes or a few terabytes of data, you can probably tolerate having a system that wasn’t highly resilient. But when you’re trying to protect petabyes or zetabytes of information, you need to have a system that’s extremely robust and highly resilient. If you were an early adopter of deduplication and have three or so completely different technologies all focused on disk backup. The complexity would be out of control.
How does legacy deduplication limit efficiency and agility?
If you have many different products, different technologies, and different sites that don’t work together, you can’t move the data efficiently between those technologies. You’d have to deduplicate the data, rehydrate it, deduplicate it again, and that’s just a waste of bandwidth and complexity that your organization may not be able to handle or manage. This problem needs to be simplified.
